Apart from gaining additional experience on the track we also spend a great deal of time with the young men teaching them correct bike maintenance, bike preparation before and after a meetings, adjustments, set ups and basic repairs to a speedway engine. From previous tours I can tell you these young men only had a limited and basic understanding of the above, when they leave Australia they have acquired new and additional skills which will be of great use.
Bringing out Kyle Newman in the first year taught us a great deal, it showed us what level of machinery we needed for the young men to be competitive along with all the day to day costs which need to be covered. The cost of bringing one rider out are mind blowing. However they are multiplied tenfold when the numbers increase by four. The costs we need to cover include the following; A competitive bike with a spare engine, airfares, travel expenses, pocket money, living expenses, riding expenses, fuel, tyres, spares and repairs, motel accommodation whilst riding away from our home base and other miscellaneous costs. Please don’t get me wrong I'm not complaining I'm just pointing out the facts. The agreement we have with the Scholarship Riders this year is they must pay for their airfares and their pocket money. All other costs come out of the Scholarships coffers, donations and my pocket.
To bring out the five young English riders this year will stretch our resources, however We have the experience, knowledge and the desire to take keen up and coming young riders along the path of success.
