BACKING THE BRITS

In conjunction with The Darren and Sharon  Boocock Speedway Scholarship, which has allowed young British riders the opportunity to race in Australia the past few years, we are launching in the UK a “BACK THE BRITS” Scheme. Aimed at supporting the young riders on the tour with their associated costs the Back The Brits fund raising will be a nationwide scheme involving various activities.

A committee is to be formed to oversee these activities and all funds raised will be utilised each year towards the costs involved for machinery, transport etc for each rider invited to join the scholarship by organiser Marcus Williams. Fans will be able to make one off or regular contributions, can purchase Back The Brits merchandise, support any functions held, buy tickets for special draws, join a 50/50 club with the chance of winning half the monthly proceeds.

Laurence Rogers, who assists Marcus Williams with recommendations of riders for the tours, has offered to co-ordinate the Back the Brits fund raising. Anyone willing to help and join the committee can contact Laurence by e-mail to : laurencerogers@blueyonder.co.uk

The fund raising efforts will begin soon with merchandise being priced up and details of the various schemes being finalized. There have been a few offers of help from various parts of the country and hopefully the scheme can start to raise the required funding to ensure the tours can continue.

For the riders invited it is a great learning curve with most of the squad being teenagers away from home on their own for the first time. So not only is it an experience they gain from for their riding but also in life and social skills and standing on their own two feet. They are taught workshop skills enabling them to do a range of activities on their bikes that stand them in good stead when they return to the UK and not be reliant on parents etc.

So hopefully the British Speedway public will realize the importance of the tours in nurturing our young Brits in the hope we can see one or more of them climb the speedway ladder and become World Stars …even World Champions.
